Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late goal stuns Lords soccer team

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – A give-and-go play that developed in the right side of the Kenyon College box resulted in a goal for Jared Ianiro and an upset victory for the John Carroll University men's soccer team. Ianiro's shot crossed the Kenyon goal line with just 9:22 left in Sunday' game, giving the host Blue Streaks a 1-0 win and sending the No. 5-ranked Lords to their first defeat of the season.

Ianiro set up the game-winner by dribbling down the right side of the Kenyon zone. He flicked a short pass to his left, where Jesse Marinaro was moving with the play. Mariano then gave the ball back to Ianiro, who was clear of his defender. Ianiro then fired a shot past Kenyon goalkeeper Ian McInturf and into the upper right corner of the Kenyon goal.

The loss dropped Kenyon's record to 1-1, while John Carroll, defending champion of the Ohio Athletic Conference, improved to 2-0.

Despite yielding the late goal, McInturf had a solid game for Kenyon, which played on an artificial surface for the first time this season. While the Lords were trying to make adjustments, the Blue Streaks posted a 9-2 shot advantage in the first half of play. McInturf, however, made five saves during that time and got the Lords to halftime locked in a scoreless tie.

In the second half, the Lords created a handful of scoring opportunities, but couldn't finish any of them.

Just 33 seconds into the second stanza, senior Woo Jeon worked free in the Blue Streaks' box and fired a shot from the right side. His aim was set for inside the left post, but the ball just skidded a couple inches wide.

About six minutes after that attempt, Jeon worked the right side again and this time got John Carroll goalkeeper Liam McIntosh to challenge him. Jeon had no problem beating McIntosh, but when he sliced his shot between two awaiting defenders and toward the open goal, it again just missed to the left.

Jeon got a third opportunity about ten minutes later, as he collected a pass in the middle of the John Carroll box, where he went unchecked. He dribbled quickly to his left, turned and launched a shot that traveled over the top of the crossbar.

One more scoring chance for the Lords came and went in the 70th minute. This time, freshman Gabe Ivins tried to one-time a bouncing ball near the John Carroll right post. He had an open angle, but his shot, too, went just wide.

The Blue Streaks ended up out-shooting Kenyon 12-8 for the game. That tally marked the first time since a September 4, 2016 contest against Heidelberg University that the Lords gave up more shots than they took.
