Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Kenyon offense picks up pace against Otterbein

GAMBIER, Ohio – The No. 5-ranked Kenyon College men's soccer team got back on track Wednesday, rebounding from a 1-0 loss over the weekend by dominating the Otterbein College Cardinals, 4-1, at Mavec Field.

Two of the Lords' goals came from an adept offense that controlled the game while posting a 25-7 advantage in shots. The other two goals developed from Otterbein errors on which the Lords pounced.

Kenyon established offensive pressure within the game's first ten minutes as shots from Oliver Wynn and Brice Koval set the tone. The shots were within a minute of each other and both were steered aside by Otterbein goalkeeper Collin Hoffmann.

About four minutes after that, however, Hoffmann was peppered with a flurry of four more Kenyon shots. The first two of those shots, from Koval and Woo Jeon, both hit the crossbar. Koval then got a second chance, as there was a mad scramble in the box. His next shot was saved again by a diving Hoffmann, but the rebound came back out to senior Henry Myers, who buried it into the net to tally his first goal of the season.

In the game's 25th minute, Otterbein managed to tie things up. Kennedy Mensah broke loose up the middle of the field and Pau Piang slotted a pass to him between two Kenyon defenders. Mensah beat both defenders to the ball and then beat Kenyon goalkeeper Ian McInturf one-on-one with a shot inside the right post.

The score remained tied through halftime and into the game's 55th minute. At that point, a ball lofted back into the Otterbein box was misplayed by a Cardinals defender. His header tumbled to the center of the box where Jeon was waiting for it. Hoffmann angled quickly to get in front of the upcoming shot, but Jeon directed it into the left side of the goal for his first score of the season.

Roughly 15 minutes later, Otterbein was whistled for a handball in its own box. Koval took the penalty shot for the Lords and blew it past Hoffmann for a 3-1 lead.

That just wasn't enough for the Kenyon offense, which added to its lead two minutes later. Deep in the left side of the Cardinals' zone, junior David Kim served a ball back out to the right side of the box. Freshman Collyn Carpenter met the pass and headed it over the Cardinals' line for the Lords' fourth and final goal of the game.

Those last two goals prompted mass substitutions for the Lords, who ended up using a total of 22 players, including seven freshmen, throughout the contest.

Next up for the Lords, now 2-1-0, will be a weekend trip to Centre College, where they'll take on Spalding College on Friday and then the host Colonels on Saturday.
