GRANVILLE, Ohio – Four Kenyon College basketball players registered double-digit scoring marks Saturday at Denison University, but that wasn't enough to overcome the host Big Red, who erased a ten-point deficit and scored 54 second-half points en route to a 93-90 North Coast Athletic Conference win.
Denison (10-7, 6-4 NCAC) squeaked out the win by scoring 30 of those 54 second-half points in the game's final seven minutes. The Big Red trailed 42-39 at half and then 62-52 after Kenyon freshman
Ugnius Zilinskas knocked down a jumper with 10:21 left in the game.
Over the next six minutes, the Big Red chipped away at the Kenyon lead until, at the 4:16 mark, they managed to square things up at 74-74 on a three-pointer from Jack Coulter. During the spurt, the Big Red logged ten points on layups, nine points on three-pointers and three points at the free throw line.
The Denison momentum seemed unstoppable at that point. The Big Red tacked on 12 of the game's next 18 points and built an 86-80 lead with 1:18 remaining.
Kenyon senior
Alexander Powell answered with a three-pointer, but Kenyon could not get any closer than three the rest of the way. From that point on, Denison drained all but one of its final ten free throw attempts to keep the Lords just out of reach. The Big Red jumped ahead by as many as six, but a three-pointer from Zilinskas just before the buzzer cut that final margin in half.
The Lords shot well, especially from three-point range. They sank 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) from beyond the arc. Denison, however, went with the quantity-over-quality approach and made good on 14-of-34 three-point shots. Overall, both teams made 31 field goals and sank 17 free throws. They were nearly even on the glass, too, as Kenyon finished with a slight 34-33 rebounding edge.
The final result was the second heart-breaking loss to Denison for the Lords (5-12, 2-8 NCAC), who fell at home earlier this season by an 84-83 count in triple overtime.
Maxwell Siwick, who scored 16 for Denison in that previous contest, fired in 35 points Saturday. He was 11-of-19 overall, including 7-of-12 from three-point territory. Matt Doyle was 3-of-5 from three-point land and added 24 for the Big Red.
Kenyon's gunners, Powell and junior
Matt Shifrin, combined to go 8-of-13 from long range. Shifrin was 5-of-8 and led the Lords with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists. Powell was 3-of-5 from deep and chalked up 12 points. Senior
Phillip Crampton scored 17, while classmate
Will Sigl chipped in with 13.
The Lords return to Tomsich Arena on Wednesday to host the Allegheny College Gators, a team they defeated once this season and six straight times over the last three seasons. That contest is slated to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
