GAMBIER, Ohio –
Phillip Crampton led five players in double-figures scoring as Kenyon College shook off a slow start and cruised to a 97-78 victory against Allegheny College on Wednesday night at Tomsich Arena. The victory improved Kenyon's record to 6-12 and 3-8 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Crampton tallied a season-high 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting. He also hit five 3-pointers. Guard
Matt Shifrin added 22 points while seniors
Alexander Powell and
Alex Laub each registered 12. Additionally,
Ben Stern totaled 11 points and
Ryan O'Neil dished out a career-best 10 assists.
As a team, the Lords hit 51.6 percent from the field and a season-high 55.2 percent from three-point range. They were also 15-of-16 (93.8%) from the free throw line.
Kenyon struggled early getting the ball through the hoop, as its first five shots did not fall. On the other side, Gators guard Billy Urso drilled a trio of three-pointers. At the 16:43 mark, Allegheny led 9-2. Crampton tallied the Lords' lone bucket, as the home team was down early.
A couple minutes later, the Lords got the contest to within a possession. O'Neil found Laub for a baseline jumper bringing the count to 9-6. On Kenyon's next couple offensive chances, Crampton and Laub each buried a three-pointer moving the deficit to one, 13-12.
The Gators added the next four points before Kenyon pushed back again. Down 17-12, the Lords hit a 7-0 run to take their first lead. Laub started the stretch with a layup and a Powell jumper followed that from the foul line. Then, Stern swished through a long ball from the corner moving the scoreboard to 19-17, Kenyon with 11:08 remaining.
The lead changed hands a couple times after that before another Kenyon run. Down 23-22 following a Jordan Rawls jumper at the 9:19 mark, the Lords hit an 8-0 stretch with buckets from Crampton,
Will Sigl and Stern.
Kenyon maintained the advantage before going up double digits. A drive down the right side of the lane by Shifrin resulted in a layup bringing the count to 43-32 with about three minutes left. By halftime, Kenyon led 47-39.
In the second half, the Lords blew open the game.
Leading 57-48, Kenyon hit three straight three-pointers, two from Shifrin and one by Crampton. With 14:08 left, the home team led 66-48. After that, the Gators never pulled the deficit any closer than 14 points.
In the second half alone, Kenyon was a sizzling 8-of-10 from three-point land. For the Gators, they hit a paltry 37.5 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from three.
Next on the schedule for Kenyon is a trip to Wabash College on Saturday for a 3 p.m. game.
