DePauw duo delivers loss to Ladies

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Haley Witschey and Delaney Swanson combined for 26 kills Saturday, but that wasn't enough to get the Kenyon College volleyball team a win. DePauw University answered with a combined 35 kills from Suzanne Peters and Liv Hartman, who boosted the host Tigers to a 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 25-16 win at Neal Fieldhouse.

Kenyon (13-7, 3-1 NCAC) got off to a good start and played stride-for-stride with the Tigers. With the first set score tied at 17-17, however, DePauw (12-7, 5-0 NCAC) went on a 5-0 roll that decided the set. The run featured a pair of kills from Hartman.

In the second set, DePauw remained in the control. Kenyon tied the score three different times, but the Tigers never relinquished the lead. They scored eight of the set's final 13 points to jump out to a commanding 2-0 lead.

In the third set, Witschey took charge with five kills and no errors, allowing the Ladies to cut the Tigers' lead in half. Swanson and Elyse Davidson both added three kills in the set. With Kenyon holding a slim 10-9 advantage, Witschey whipped up a couple of kills, Davison followed with one of her own and the Ladies benefitted from a DePauw error to jump ahead 14-9. That lead ballooned to 17-10 before Kenyon forced a fourth set.

The Ladies' momentum ended there. DePauw used another 5-0 run in the fourth set to move a close 15-13 lead to a comfortable 20-13 margin, making way for the set and match victory. Peters was the difference, as she closed out the Ladies with seven kills and no errors in that final set.

Overall, Kenyon hit at a .160 clip with 48 kills. Witschey had 14 kills for Kenyon and Swanson finished with a dozen. Katie Howard chalked up a team-high 15 digs and Meghan Cason had 31 assists.

DePauw amassed 57 kills and swung at a .239 rate. Peters led the way with 20 kills, while Hartman tacked on 15. Jenna Purichia came up with a match-high 21 digs and Ally Low served up 44 assists.

The Ladies return home for a busy week ahead. Thursday, they'll host The College of Wooster and then Saturday host a tri-match with Hiram College and Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
