No. 16 Lords draw with No. 22 Ohio Wesleyan

GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College and Ohio Wesleyan University, the top two teams in the North Coast Athletic Conference, played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Wednesday afternoon at Mavec Field.

Kenyon (11-1-2, 5-0-1 NCAC) looked like the better side and it showed as the home team outshot the visitors 29-12, including an 18-7 advantage from the second half through the end of the contest.

Early in the game, Brice Koval nearly put the Lords up 1-0 as he took a mid-air shot near the right post; however, an Ohio Wesleyan defender stopped it preventing the early score. At the 20th minute, Kenyon broke through.

J.P. Baughman saved a shot from the left side by John Penas but the deflected ball found its way to Philippe Stengel who headed home his sixth goal of the year.

The Lords were in control until OWU (10-2-2, 4-0-2 NCAC) found the equalizer at 33:32. A tough foul call against Kenyon's defense right at the top of the 18 resulted in a free kick from Adam Yingling. The junior fired and his shot ricocheted off the left post and went in.

Kenyon added two more on-goal shots the rest of the half, however, Baughman stopped both.

In the second half, the visitors had two on-target looks in the first 10 minutes of action but never threatened after that. For the Lords, Scott Upton just missed at the 62:50 mark, and later, Sam Carson had two looks that were both saved by Baughman.

The overtime periods saw the 16th-ranked Lords dominate possession. Ohio Wesleyan never attempted a shot while Kenyon took five. Sam Hosmer-Quint's header in the first overtime was saved. Then in the second, Koval's header went wide.

Those turned out to be the best attempts for the Lords.

Kenyon, which sits in first in the NCAC with 16 points, two more than OWU, next travels to DePauw University on Saturday for a 12 p.m. start.
