Tigers edge Ladies on Senior Day

GAMBIER, Ohio – Kennedy Malcolm's first collegiate goal was all the Wittenberg University Tigers needed Sunday to post a 1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Kenyon College Ladies. It was the Tigers' first regular-season win over Kenyon since October 21, 2011, a span of 13 games.

The defeat, combined with The College of Wooster's 2-1 win over Earlham College, moved Kenyon from sole possession of second place to a share of second, with Wooster, in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings.

The loss also stopped Kenyon's win streak at four and dropped the Ladies' records to 9-6 overall and 8-4 in NCAC play. The team will look to regain sole possession of second place on Thursday, when they play their next game against Wooster, which is now 12-5 overall and 8-4 in the NCAC. That contest is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start at McBride Field.

The goal that sank the Ladies on Sunday came off a penalty corner in the game's 32nd minute. Starting from the right side of the Kenyon cage, Blaine Donnelly inserted the corner to Megan Niswonger, who flicked a pass to her left. The pass was met by Malcolm, who loaded up and fired her shot past Kenyon goalkeeper Suzy Deems.

The goal was the first allowed by Deems and the Kenyon defense since a 1-0 overtime loss to Denison University on October 3rd. That shutout spanned more than 310 minutes for the Ladies, who still rank second in the conference with a 0.77 goals against average.

On the other side of the field, Kenyon was not without its chances. The Ladies outshot the Tigers, 16-6, and earned seven corners, compared to four for Wittenberg. In the first half, Kenyon had good looks from Molly Keen, Hannah Paterakis and Olivia O'Connell, however, Wittenberg keeper Allie Purvis stopped all three attempts.

In the second half, the Ladies put together a late flurry, but they were consistently denied by blocked shots and Purvis, who ended the game with six stops.

Prior to the match, the team recognized the careers of Paterakis and Abbey Roswell who have helped the program attain 56 wins over the last three-plus seasons.
