Wooster fends off Ladies, 2-1

GAMBIER, Ohio – A pair of Sydney Schuster goals and a few defensive stops late in the game allowed The College of Wooster to defeat Kenyon College by a 2-1 count on Thursday at McBride Field. In the process, Wooster clinched the two seed for next week's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament while the Ladies remained in third.

Additionally, Wooster (13-5, 9-4 NCAC) earned the season sweep of Kenyon for the first time since 2012 and attained its first win in Gambier since October 23, 2012.

The Ladies (9-7, 8-5 NCAC) started strong offensively, getting near the Wooster cage a few times before breaking through at the 5:35 mark. Sophomore Tara Shetty drove right side and maneuvered around Wooster goalie Katie Shideler before putting in her sixth goal of the year.

That actually turned out to be the only on-goal attempt in the half for Kenyon before the visitors tied it up. With just under five minutes left, Schuster drove by a trio of Ladies defenders and fired from the left post into the cage. It was her 18th goal of the season.

After halftime, Schuster pushed the Fighting Scots ahead. Just 1:27 in, the Ladies tried to clear the ball away from the cage, but a deflection came to Schuster who back-handed a shot into the right corner.

Kenyon did have several chances to tie the match after that though. Shideler saved Olivia O'Connell's attempt at 38:50 along the left post while a few hard-hit shots from Molly Keen were blocked. The Ladies' last chance came on a penalty corner from Paulina Mendez, but her pass to Keen ended up with another Wooster block.

The Ladies, who have fallen by just one goal in all of their losses this season, will close their regular season on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Denison University.
