WOOSTER, Ohio –
Thomas Merkle threw for 208 yards and
Rob Meagher ran for 76, but that was about all the offense the Kenyon College football team could muster Saturday against The College of Wooster defense, which shut down the visiting Lords, 41-0, in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at John P. Papp Stadium.
The loss dropped Kenyon to 0-8 overall and 0-7 in NCAC play. The zero on the scoreboard marked the first time since a 2015 loss to Wabash College that the normally high-powered Kenyon offense was held scoreless.
On the other side of the field, the Fighting Scots gave the ball to Antonio Bailey early and often. Bailey, a senior running back, responded by scoring on touchdown runs of one and four yards, and then added a 13-yard touchdown catch to give Wooster a 21-0 lead late in the second quarter.
Wooster (5-3, 4-3 NCAC) then tacked on a 22-yard Henry Whyte field goal to move ahead 24-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Wooster receiver Nick Strausbaugh hauled in a 63-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Mateo Renteria, Whyte converted another field goal and Bailey capped off all scoring with a 36-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown run.
Bailey finished with 126 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while Strausbaugh racked up 169 receiving yards and a touchdown on six catches. Renteria was 17-of-27 for 286 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
The Kenyon offense did create chances, but just could not capitalize. The Lords moved the ball into the red zone three times, but missed a field, turned the ball over on downs and tossed an interception.
Merkle's 208 yards came on a 26-of-42 performance. He was picked off twice and sacked once. His top target, as it has been all season, was senior receiver
Ian Robertson, who snared eight balls for 100 yards. That gave him his fourth straight and sixth overall 100-yard receiving game this season. He now has 84 catches for 956 yards.
Meagher carried the ball 20 times and his 76 yards were a season-high.
Defensively for Kenyon, both
Chris Nehasil and
Tom Zaleski recorded nine tackles. Zaleski and
Sam Dickey each had a sack.
The Lords remain on the road next Saturday, when they head to Greencastle, Indiana to battle the DePauw University Tigers (3-5, 3-4 NCAC).
