OBERLIN, Ohio – The Kenyon Ladies (12-5, 2-0 NCAC) snapped a small two-match skid on Friday night as they prevailed in four sets against Oberlin College (4-11, 0-4 NCAC) in a North Coast Athletic Conference volleyball match at Philips Gymnasium.
Delaney Swanson led the way with 20 kills while
Mackenzie Bruzzio and
Maleah Miller chipped in with 11 and eight kills, respectively. Sophomore
Meghan Cason handed out a match-high 46 assists while newcomer
Katie Howard collected 19 digs, also a match-high.
Kenyon got off to a fast start as it raced out to a 7-2 lead after a block from Miller and
Haley Witschey. That forced an Oberlin timeout and the home team responded. A block from Emery Beacon brought the tally to 11-8 before the Ladies pulled away. A Swanson kill capped off a 9-3 run and that led to a 25-13 opening-set win.
Oberlin, which hit a dismal -0.081 in the first, picked up its energy in the second stanza to tie the match. The Ladies led 9-4 after an error but Oberlin fought back as a kill from Jaya Flynn-Young knotted things up at 14. Oberlin added an ace and kill after that and never relinquished the lead to the Ladies, despite Kenyon pulling to within a point (20-19) after a block from
Elyse Davidson and Cason.
Third-set competition saw the Ladies come back after being down as many as seven points. The visitors trailed 14-7 and later 17-11 before striking back. A 10-4 run, highlighted by three Miller kills and a pair of blocks, tied the set at 21. A few sequences later, Bruzzio's kill pushed Kenyon in front 24-23. After one more tie, 24-all, Bruzzio and Swanson recorded back-to-back kills to clinch the set 26-24.
In the fourth, three-straight points from Oberlin moved the home team up 14-13 before the Ladies rebounded with a 4-0 run to regain control. Swanson registered two kills and added a block assist with Miller to move the scoreboard to 19-16. Oberlin never countered that stretch from Kenyon as the Ladies closed out the match 25-20 with a kill from
Lauren Limbach.
Tomorrow, the Ladies will host Denison University at 3 p.m. for another conference contest at Tomsich Arena. It will be Senior Day for Kenyon.
