GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College senior guard
Matt Shifrin scored a career-best 34 points Saturday, but his production was not enough to power the Lords basketball team to a victory over the DePauw University Tigers, who capitalized on second-half free throws and chalked up an 83-75 North Coast Athletic Conference win.
Shifrin, whose previous single-game high was 23 points, was 13-of-23 (56.5 percent) from the floor, including an 8-of-15 showing (53.3 percent) from three-point range. He scored 14 points in the first half and 20 more in the second. His 34 points were the most scored in a game for the Lords since Bryan Yelvington matched that total in a 2009 road contest at Denison University.
Kenyon (0-7, 0-2 NCAC) built an early lead in this game and even went up by as many as 11 points within the first 10 minutes of play. The Tigers, however, clawed their way back to tie things up at 33-33 with 3:19 left in the half. The spurt by DePauw was part of an 18-7 run that spanned the final eight minutes of the half and put the Tigers ahead 39-36 at intermission.
DePauw (5-0, 1-0 NCAC) increased its lead early in the second half, but Shifrin caught fire and scored eight straight for the Lords, who tied the game at 44-44. An
Elijah Davis free throw and a
Carter Powell jumper put Kenyon back in front, 47-44, with 15:26 showing on the game clock.
From that point, the teams went back-and-forth and ended up tied again, this time at 61-61 with six minutes remaining. DePauw then sank four straight free throws and followed up with back-to-back field goals to open up a lead it would not relinquish.
During the second half of play, which witnessed 31 personal fouls, the Tigers got to the free throw line 29 times and made 20 of their attempts. At the other end of the floor, Kenyon made just three of its 10 second-half free throw chances.
Neither team shot well from the charity stripe, but the volume of trips DePauw made proved to be the difference. For the game, DePauw was 22-of-35 (62.9 percent) at the line, while Kenyon was 7-of-15 (46.7 percent).
In addition to Shifrin's output, the Lords got 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists from Powell, as well as 10 points and three assists from Davis.
DePauw was paced by Luke Steinhart and Nick Felke, who scored 18 and 17, respectively. Andrew Kus snared a game-high 12 rebounds, helping the Tigers build a 49-35 edge on the boards.
