OBERLIN, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's basketball team tied a season-high with 69 field goal attempts during Wednesday evening's conference contest at Oberlin College. The Ladies, however, struggled to find quality looks against the host Yeowomen, who held on for a 51-47 victory.
Kenyon was 17-of-69 (24.6 percent) overall and 5-of-24 (20.8 percent) from long range. The Ladies attacked the rim in the first quarter, scoring eight of their first 11 points in the paint. Over the final three quarters, the Ladies scored just eight more points in the paint.
Kenyon stayed in the game by winning the rebound battle, 51-38, and by forcing 14 Oberlin turnovers. Toward the end of the third quarter, it appeared the Ladies had the momentum. A driving layup from
Paige Matijasich gave Kenyon a 35-34 advantage and a blocked shot at the other end from
Bridget Molnar seemed to give the Ladies a spark heading into the final frame.
Oberlin turned things around quickly and extinguished that spark by scoring the next six points, while not allowing a Kenyon field goal for the first six minutes of the quarter.
Oberlin twice moved ahead by seven points in the fourth, but Kenyon charged back. A three-pointer from
Grace Connery got the Ladies within four points and a layup at the 1:03 mark from Molnar made the score 49-47 in favor of the Yeowomen.
Oberlin missed its next shot, but the Ladies gave the ball right back on a turnover. While the Yeowomen were burning clock on their next possession, Kenyon committed a foul away from the hoop with only a few seconds left on the shot clock. Oberlin's Alexandra Stipano made both free throws, sealing the Yeowomen's victory with 13 seconds remaining.
Oberlin shot 5-of-10 (50 percent) in the fourth quarter, but just 18-of-51 (35.3 percent) for the game. Kenyon was 3-of-12 (25.0 percent) in the final frame.
Matijasich finished with her third double-double of the season, scoring a game-high 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for Kenyon.
Sharon Hull had nine points and nine rebounds, while
Lane Davis chalked up a game-high 12 boards.
The Kenyon defense did a solid job of containing Oberlin's top player Olivia Canning, who ended up posting 13 points and seven rebounds. Five of her points came at the free throw line. Stipano was the only other Yeowomen in double-digits. She scored 11 with three coming at the free throw line, where Oberlin was just 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) as a team.
The loss knocked Kenyon's records to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. Oberlin, now a winner of three straight, improved to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC.
