Battling Bishops storm past Lords

DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University reached its season's second-highest point total on Saturday as it defeated Kenyon College 108-82 in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Branch Rickey Arena.

Kenyon dropped to 6-15 (3-11 NCAC) while Ohio Wesleyan improved to 15-6 and 10-4 in conference play.

The Lords were led by the efforts of Alex Laub and Ugnius Zilinskas who came off the bench. Laub scored a career-high 18 points while Zilinskas tallied 13 points and four rebounds. Additionally, Alexander Powell nearly recorded a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds while Ben Stern and Phillip Crampton each registered eight points.

Within the game's first five minutes, Crampton had scored four of the team's eight points including a layup at 15:40 which pushed the Lords ahead 8-5. Nearly a couple minutes later, Laub added a layup of his own moving Kenyon in front again 12-10.

Ohio Wesleyan responded with a quick 8-0 run as Grant Gossard's layup at 12:35 moved the home team up a half-dozen. Kenyon's next pair of possessions saw Powell drain a pair of buckets, including a three-ball, to bring the Lords back to within one, 18-17.

However, another spurt by the Battling Bishops moved their lead to double digits. After Laub's jumper brought the score to 25-22, OWU hit a 7-0 stretch capped off by two Seth Clark free throws. After that, Kenyon was only able to crack the double-digit deficit twice, with its last on a Stern three-ball at 1:39 which moved the scoreboard to 46-37.

By halftime, the Battling Bishops led 52-37 by shooting 50 percent (17-34) from the field.

In the second stanza, Ohio Wesleyan's offense did even better shooting nearly 56 percent including 45 percent (9-20) from three-point land. Additionally, they shot 9-of-10 from the charity stripe.

On the other side, the Lords never threatened the home team's 15-point lead in the second half. The Battling Bishops pushed their advantage to as many as 31 points on three different occasions.

Next on the schedule for Kenyon is a home date versus Oberlin College on February 7 at 8 p.m.
