Lords fend off Highlanders in ninth

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Kenyon College (1-6) earned its first win of the season on Saturday as it overcame two errors in the ninth to defeat Cairn University 3-2 at Gladwin Sports Complex.

The Lords' pitching staff had their best game of the season highlighted by the performance of Nathan Chandler. Through the first four innings on Saturday, Chandler retired 12-of-15 batters, struck out eight and allowed just one Highlanders player to reach scoring position.

With Chandler dealing for nearly half the game, Kenyon's offense came through with three runs.

Mikey Arman broke a scoreless tie in the second as his single to left field drove home Ryan Page. An inning later, Page helped the Lords increase their lead to 2-0 as he drew a bases-loaded walk pushing Trenton DiFilippo home.

Then in the third, Arman got the frame started with a triple to right field. Two batters later, fellow senior Matt von Roemer connected with a sacrifice fly to left which scored Arman.

The Highlanders were able to respond in the home half of the frame. With two outs, Jacob Allen was walked. In the next sequence, the Lords tried to catch him stealing, however, the throw was off and it allowed Daniel Morales to score from third.

Cairn capped off the fifth with an RBI triple by Brian Amantia which left the tally at 3-2.

From the sixth inning to the end, the Lords weren't able to replicate their early-inning success on offense. In that same span, Cairn didn't threaten much either. Its closest chances to tie the game came in the eighth and ninth frames.

Emilio Alvarez's fielder's choice to von Roemer at shortstop in the eighth resulted in a throw-out of Nathan Wilson at home.

Things then got very dicey for Kenyon in the ninth. Back-to-back errors occurred with one out, and later Morales was walked. With the bases loaded, Kenyon pitcher Ross Scheinberg induced an infield fly by Cairn batter Andrew Philips. Needing one more out, Scheinberg closed the door on the Highlanders as he struck out Allen. It was Scheinberg's first career save.

Also aiding the Lords' efforts on the mound was Will Oakley who tossed 2.2 innings, allowed just one hit and struck out two. Offensively, Page went 3-for-3 while Arman collected two hits.

Kenyon has a couple days off but will return to action March 13 for a doubleheader against Albright College (1-0).
