FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Kenyon College's 4-2 victory against Earlham College on Friday was its sixth in a row and evened the team's record at 6-6. The Lords' pitching was solid again, this time limiting the Quakers to their second-lowest run total of the season.
On the mound,
Ross Scheinberg tossed seven innings, struck out five and only allowed one earned run. He also induced eight fly-outs and a half-dozen. Relievers
Eric DelRosso and
Will Oakley closed the last two frames and were effective, too. Earlham tallied two hits and placed a couple base-runners in scoring position, however, it never found the tying runs.
The Quakers got out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Kendal Baker singled up the middle scoring Isaiah Shake from second base. From the second inning through the sixth, though, Earlham put just one in scoring position as Kenyon got in front.
In the second, the Lords tied things up as
Mikey Arman brought home
Alex Hoskins on an RBI infield single.
That 1-1 score remained until the top of the sixth.
Matt von Roemer singled to center field to start the frame and in the next at-bat,
Matt Contreras roped a double to left field allowing von Roemer to score. A couple sequences later,
Patrick O'Leary stole second and the throw from Earlham's catcher brought Contreras home from third.
Kenyon's 3-1 lead extended by a run an inning later. After
Chris Santucci's sacrifice bunt, von Roemer smacked a triple to left field which plated
Paul Siciliano.
Trailing 4-1, Earlham added its second run in the home half of the seventh. A two-out run-scoring single by Addison Robertson inched the Quakers closer.
Then in the ninth, Earlham got its first two batters on base which prompted a Kenyon pitching change. Oakley came in and shut things down for Earlham, as he retired the next three batters and earned the save, his third of the year.
Tomorrow, the Lords will close out their spring break trip with a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. against Washington College (Md).
