GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Kenyon College prevailed over DePauw University 14-12 on Saturday afternoon in a North Coast Athletic Conference men's lacrosse game at Reavis Stadium. The Tigers scored four straight goals late in the fourth before a
Nick Connelly save with 1:45 left ended any more scoring opportunities for the home team.
The Lords (5-2, 2-0 NCAC) were led by senior
Jonah Florence's three-goal, four-assist performance.
Nick Vitale also scored three times and assisted on two. Additionally,
Emilio Sosa and
Joe Woody each tallied two goals.
Kenyon got off to a good start in the first as five different players scored. Just 85 seconds into the game,
Josh Galardi found Florence pushing the Lords ahead 1-0. Then, with 3:07 left in the period, Sosa scored on pass from Vitale.
Early in the second,
Will Harrigan notched his second goal of the year and extended Kenyon's advantage to 6-1.
Following that, each team made runs. DePauw (3-5, 0-2 NCAC) got in gear and brought the score to 6-4 after Nate Greenberg's goal at the 9:33 mark. Kenyon then returned the favor and went up 10-4 with 49 seconds left. Despite limited time on the clock, the Tigers scored twice in 16 seconds to bring the halftime deficit to 10-6.
There were only three goals scored in the third, two by the Lords, and they took a 12-7 lead into the fourth.
About five minutes into the final period, Vitale's tenth score of the season moved Kenyon back up six again, 14-8. After that, DePauw made another run.
With 5:47 on the clock, Ben Sherman scored to cut the lead to 14-9. Nearly three minutes later, Steen Jorgensen scored twice and moved the count to 14-12. Jorgensen fired one more shot at the 1:45 mark, but Connelly stopped his attempt from the left side. DePauw never shot again as the Lords won by two.
Connelly notched nine saves in the win as the Lords improved to 6-0 all-time against the Tigers.
Kenyon, which is one win away from matching last year's total, will host Otterbein University on March 21 at 4 p.m.
