GAMBIER, Ohio – Wednesday's overtime goal from senior
Jonah Florence lifted the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team to an 11-10 non-conference home win against the Otterbein University Cardinals. It was the Lords' third-straight win against Otterbein and second straight by one goal.
With the game knotted at 10-10, the extra session kicked off with Otterbein winning the face-off. The Cardinals then managed two shots, but the first was blocked by a Kenyon defender and the second was fired wide of the goal. Later in the possession, a bad pass led to a turnover.
Kenyon took possession, ran some time off the clock and then went to work. Senior
Pierce Kraft circled around the right side and unleashed a pass back toward the middle and intended for junior
Emilio Sosa. The pass was off target and bounced by the lunging Sosa. The bounce, however, went right to Florence, who scooped it up and fired the game-winner into the right side of the net.
The goal was Florence's second of the game and his 13th of the season for the Lords, who improved to 6-2 with the overtime win. It was also Florence's second game-winning goal of the season.
Throughout regulation, neither team could separate from the other. Kenyon had two-goal leads on three different occasions, but never led by more than that. Otterbein trailed most of the game, but did go up by one goal at two different times.
In the opening quarter, both teams played cautiously, rarely testing each other in the near-freezing temperature. Kenyon did find the net about four minutes into play with a left-to-right shot from junior
Joe Woody. It took another five minutes of play, but Galardi ended up doubling the Lords' total on an unassisted goal. Otterbein responded with back-to-back scores within a one-minute span, but Kenyon closed out the quarter with a man-up goal from junior
Emilio Sosa, who was assisted by Florence.
The remainder of the contest went pretty much the same way, with a couple of lead changes and six tied scores. Kenyon's 3-2 lead was neutralized in the second quarter and the Lords and Cardinals went into the halftime tied at 5-5.
Trailing 6-5 in the third, it looked as if Kenyon would finally take control. The Lords scored four of the game's next five goals to pull ahead 9-7. Sosa had two of those goals, while
Will Robbins and Galardi had the other two.
The Kenyon run was met, once again, by an Otterbein goal and the Lords carried a slim 9-8 edge into the final quarter.
Galardi scored once more in the fourth to give Kenyon a 10-8 lead with 10:04 left in the game, but Otterbein goals from Connor Dziewit and Robby Fields squared things at 10-10. The Cardinals did make one last push to win it in regulation, but Kenyon goalie
Nick Connelly made a great save at the buzzer.
Connelly wound up making seven saves for the Lords, who out-shot the Cardinals, 47-38.
Sosa and Galardi each scored three times. Galardi also tacked on two assists for a game-high five points. Florence finished with two goals and an assist, while Robbins had a goal and two assists.
Dziewit had a game-high four goals for Otterbein, which fell to 2-5 with the loss.
