FORT PIERCE, Fla. – For the second time in as many games, the Kenyon College Lords baseball team let a close game get away in the final innings. Monday, the Lords' bullpen allowed six runs in the last three innings, resulting in a 12-7 loss to the Monmouth College Fighting Scots.

The loss came one day after the Lords allowed 12 runs to Misericordia University in the final three innings of a 15-4 loss. Kenyon is now 0-2 to start the season, while the win bumped Monmouth's record to 2-4.

With the scored tied 6-6 after six innings of play, Monmouth registered two runs in the top of the seventh inning and then put the game away with four more runs in the top of the eighth. The two runs in the seventh came on a double, a fielders' choice, a stolen base and a Kenyon error. In the eighth, the Fighting Scots used a couple of walks, a double and two singles to jump ahead, 12-6.

Freshman Alex Gow started the game on the mound for the Lords. He ended up pitching three innings and giving up six runs on six hits and three walks. Only three of the runs scored were earned and Gow fanned six of the 29 batters he faced.

The rocky start put Kenyon behind, 6-1, after the first three innings of play. In the bottom of the fourth, however, the Lords' bats evened things up with a five-run frame. Patrick O'Leary and Gow singled to lead off the inning. Paul Siciliano was hit by a pitch to load up the bases and Joaquin Murrieta doubled to right field to score two runs. The next batter, Eric DelRosso, homered to left field, scoring three more runs and knotting the game at 6-6.

Kenyon's first run of the game was scored in the bottom of the first. Matt von Roemer led off the inning with a double down the left field line. He later came around to score on another double, this one struck by Matt Contreras. The Lords' final run came on an RBI single from Siciliano in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Kenyon had 10 hits in the game and O'Leary, batting cleanup, ended up with three of them, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. He was the only Kenyon batter with a multi-hit game.

Monmouth also scored on run in the first inning and then tacked on two in the second and three more in the third off of Gow. The rest of Fighting Scots' damage came off a trio of Kenyon relievers. Ross Scheinberg, Luke Calcei and Will Oakley combined to allow six runs on six hits and three walks over the final six innings of the game.

Monmouth totaled a dozen hits in the game and both teams made three errors. The Fighting Scots' errors did not lead to any unearned runs for the Lords. On the other hand, Kenyon's three errors led to four unearned runs for Monmouth.

The Lords get right back at it Tuesday for a 4 p.m. game against La Roche College, a team that is off to a 3-1 start to the season.
