MARIETTA, Ohio – Junior
Mackenzie Bruzzio had double-digit kills totals in both matches as the Kenyon Ladies volleyball team won 3-1 against Earlham College and 3-0 against Franciscan University of Steubenville on Friday at the Marietta College River City Classic.
Against the Quakers,
Delaney Swanson led the team with 16 kills and a team-high 18 digs. Right-side hitter
Haley Witschey added 11 kills while Bruzzio chipped in with 10 kills and 10 digs. Additionally,
Meghan Cason handed out 39 assists while freshman
Katie Howard helped on the defensive end with 17 digs.
As a team, the Ladies connected well, hitting .248 with 14 errors on 149 swings. After winning the first two sets by identical 25-22 scores, Earlham pulled the match to 2-1 as it won the third 25-20. Then in the fourth, the Ladies won by their biggest margin, 25-19.
During the second match against Franciscan, Kenyon cruised by 25-13 and 25-11 scores in the first and second sets, respectively. At one point in the first set, Kenyon reeled off eight straight points. Then in the second, the Ladies closed the set with five straight, including two aces from Howard.
In the final set, competition was much closer. Franciscan led 18-17 after an attack error, and later Kenyon went up 23-21. Then, Franciscan tallied two straight to tie at 23. After that though, the Ladies got a point off error and Witschey closed it with a kill.
Bruzzio led with 12 kills while Cason added 23 assists.
Tomorrow, Kenyon will face Emory and Henry College and Marietta starting at 11 a.m.
