DELAWARE, Ohio – Alexis Roberts' goal in the first overtime lifted Ohio Wesleyan University to a 2-1 win over Kenyon College on Saturday in a North Coast Athletic Conference field hockey match at Selby Stadium. It was OWU's first victory over Kenyon since October 11, 2012, a span of 11 games.
Kenyon had plenty of offensive chances in the first half as it held a 13-2 shots advantage over the home team. Sophomore
Molly Keen led the Ladies with five shots, three of which were saved by keeper Paige Ross.
The Ladies also took nine penalty corners in the half, and had a few shots, but nothing found cage.
Near the end of the first, the Ladies came close to breaking the scoreless tie. A drive by
Olivia O'Connell at the right side of the post saw the sophomore fire but the attempt was deflected away by Ross.
For Ohio Wesleyan, its best opportunity came at the 17th minute. A shot from Barbara Welling in the middle of the box was saved on a diving attempt from
Suzy Deems.
In the second half, the Battling Bishops picked up their offensive efforts as they outshot Kenyon 12-9. One of those shots gave the home team a 1-0 lead. At the 44th minute, Welling got behind the defense and back-handed a shot into the right post.
Not even three minutes later, the Ladies tied it up. After a
Hannah Paterakis corner,
Hannah Sklar passed to an open Keen who rocketed a shot tying the match. It was Keen's second goal of the season.
The Ladies had seven more shots after that goal; however, OWU was able to fend Kenyon away.
OWU added seven more shots as well in the final six minutes of the half. Deems, along with the Kenyon defense, blocked a couple attempts and saved three more.
In the overtime period, OWU got the only shot off and it turned out to be the game-winner. A pass from Jamie Grant came to Roberts along the right side and she shot into the left post.
Tomorrow, the Ladies will look to bounce back when they travel to Wittenberg University for a noon match.
