Ladies’ upset bid falls short against Generals

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Kenyon College field hockey team completed Sunday a weekend packed with stiff competition. Friday, the Ladies claimed a 1-0 win over Centre College, a team that made it to the 2017 NCAA Tournament's quarterfinal round. Sunday, the Ladies outshot No. 20-ranked Washington and Lee University, but their upset bid fell short in a 1-0 loss to the host Generals.

Sunday's contest was the home-opener for Washington and Lee, which suffered a 1-0 overtime loss Friday at No. 24-ranked Johns Hopkins University.

The Generals managed just six shots, only two of which were on target, against Kenyon's stingy defense. The one Washington and Lee shot that matter most, however, crossed the Kenyon goal line in the game's 22nd minute. Following a penalty corner, Caroline Caruso ripped a shot that was blocked by a Kenyon defender. The rebound came out to Annalise Thole who scored the Generals' lone goal from the right side.

Kenyon outshot Washington and Lee 9-4 in the first half and 16-6 for the game. The Ladies' best two scoring chances in the first half came from Olivia O'Connell and Molly Keen. Around the 16-minute mark, O'Connell fired a shot from the left side, but it was saved by Generals' goalie Ariyel Yavalar. Then, near the end of the half, Keen launched a bullet up the middle off a penalty corner, but it was also steered aside by Yavalar.

Keen got two more good looks off penalty corners in the second half, including one that just missed the right side with 40 seconds left in the game.

The Ladies defense held Washington and Lee to just two shots and no corners in the second half. In that same span, the Ladies offense had seven shots and six corners, but just could not capitalize on the opportunities.

Up next for Kenyon is a trip to Oberlin College on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. game, which will be this season's first in North Coast Athletic Conference play for the Ladies.
