CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University Spartans scored early and powered forward to a 3-0 upset of the No. 7-ranked Kenyon College Lords in a Wednesday night non-conference men's soccer game at DiSanto Field.
The loss was the first of the season for Kenyon, which slipped to 7-1-1. The victory for the unranked Spartans boosted their record to 8-1-0.
It took roughly eight minutes for Case to notch the game's first goal. A corner kick sent in from the left side by Zachary Senft traveled to the middle of the Kenyon box. Christian Lytle met the kick head-on and directed it into the right side of the Kenyon net.
About 14 minutes later, the Spartans struck again. A crossing pass from the right side again got to the middle of the Lords' box. In an attempt to clear it, a Kenyon defender got his foot on the ball, however, it took a funny bounce off his foot and ended up going right to Case's Alex Besl, who buried it in the top left corner of the goal.
The score remained 2-0 through halftime and up until the game's 61st minute. At that point, Case extended its lead with one final goal. Senft had possession for Case prior to reaching the left end line. He delivered a left-to-right pass that somehow eluded a Kenyon defender and ended up at the feet of Nathan Ekberg. All Ekberg had to do was get a foot on it to steer it over the goal line.
The Lords' two best opportunities to score came from
David Anderson and
Aidan Schoellkopf. Anderson's shot back in the first half sailed just over the Case crossbar. In the second half, Schoellkopf was a bit off the mark on a bicycle kick off a pass from the right post.
The Spartans ended up outshooting the Lords, 12-8. That total for Kenyon represented its lowest shot output of the season and its lowest since taking eight shots against John Carroll University in the second game of the 2017 season.
The Lords will try to get back on track Saturday when they return to North Coast Athletic Conference action in a noon game at rival Denison University.
