GAMBIER, Ohio – Saturday morning, the Kenyon College volleyball team opened the second day of the Kenyon Invitational with a tidy 3-0 whipping of the Grove City College Wolverines. The host Ladies, however, capped off the day with a 3-1 loss to the Muskingum University Fighting Muskies.

The defeat was the Ladies first of the season and brought their record to 6-1. By the time the two-day, five-team Invitational was complete, Muskingum also owned a 6-1 record, while Grove City departed with a 1-6 mark.

Kenyon's total of six straight wins to open the season was the program's best since the 1986 team got things started with nine straight wins.

Against Grove City, junior Mackenzie Bruzzio dialed up a team-high 11 kills. She also contributed five blocks, five digs and a couple of service aces. Classmate Haley Witschey smashed nine kills, while senior Delaney Swanson recorded seven kills and ten digs as the Ladies rolled to a 25-22, 25-19, 25-20 victory.

Kenyon piled up 39 kills and hit at a .276 rate against the Wolverines. In four sets against Muskingum, the Ladies threw down 58 kills and hit at a .245 rate. The Ladies, however, had seven service errors and ran into 15 Muskingum blocks during the 25-18, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18 defeat.

Muskingum sophomore Brooke Fatheree stole the show, amassing 24 kills and 24 digs.

The Ladies countered with 23 kills and 16 digs from Swanson. Bruzzio added 11 more kills and 15 digs. Both Witschey and Elyse Davidson tacked on eight kills, while Maleah Miller scored seven.

Setter Meghan Cason finished with 87 assists on the day, while libero Katie Howard piled up 19 digs.

Swanson's team-best total of 30 kills over the two matches gave her 91 on the season and 945 for her career. She's just 18 kills shy of passing Mary Myers '11 for sixth place on Kenyon's all-time list and she's just 55 kills away from becoming the sixth player in Kenyon history to accumulate 1,000 career kills.

Swanson and the rest of the Ladies will play again Tuesday night, when they host the Capital University Crusaders in a non-conference match.
