GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Tied with the DePauw University Tigers, 50-50, with just five minutes left in Saturday's basketball game, the Kenyon College Lords let an upset opportunity slip through their hands. The Lords did not make a field goal the rest of the way, allowing DePauw to escape with a 62-54 conference win.
During those final few minutes, Kenyon junior
Carter Powell made two free throws.
Elijah Davis and
Ugnius Zilinskas each made one. The Lords, however, misfired on their final six field goal attempts.
At the other end of the court, DePauw was both 4-of-6 from the floor and at the free throw line during that same five-minute stretch. The Tigers moved ahead 52-50, taking the lead for good on a Nolan Ginther layup. A minute later, Aaron Shank hit a free throw. Cole Jenkins then tacked on back-to-back buckets to push the Tigers to a 57-50 lead with two-and-a-half minutes remaining.
Although Ginther didn't play a huge role down the stretch, he was the story of the game. The sophomore forward led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor and 7-of-11 shooting at the free throw line.
For Kenyon, Powell recorded his second double-double of the season. He racked up 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four blocked shots and a couple of steals. Davis, a freshman, scored 14, while Zilinskas, a sophomore, added nine.
Both teams struggled to find any kind of rhythm in the first half with Kenyon shooting 28.1 percent and DePauw firing at 31.0 percent. Ginther had six of his 23 points in the first half and teammate Ken Decker had five. No other player, on either team, had more than four points at the break.
DePauw limped out to a 4-0 lead while Kenyon didn't score until Zilinskas hit a pair of free throws at the 15:25 mark. A little less than a minute later, Zilinskas registered the Lords' first field goal to make it 6-4 in favor of DePauw.
Despite its shooting struggles, Kenyon managed to tie up DePauw at 19-19 and then got to halftime trailing just 22-21.
At the start of the second half, Powell rang up three straight points, giving the Lords their first lead of the game. Later, Kenyon went ahead by two points on three different occasions, but it could not expand on that lead.
DePauw never really pulled away either. The Tigers' largest lead reached eight points mid-way through the second half and then again at the end of the game.
The loss dropped Kenyon to 1-16 overall and 0-10 within the North Coast Athletic Conference. The win improved DePauw to 11-6 overall and 5-5 in NCAC action.
