GAMBIER, Ohio – Oberlin College connected on nearly 53 percent of its two-point shots and used that to edge Kenyon College 66-57 on Wednesday night in a North Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball contest at Tomsich Arena.
The Yeomen (10-8, 6-5 NCAC) scored 34 points in the paint and added a 10-for-12 showing at the foul line. Eli Silverman-Lloyd led the way with 11 points and collected five rebounds while Charles Tiedemann contributed 10 points and seven boards. As a team, Oberlin shot 44.6 percent from the field.
For Kenyon (1-17, 0-11 NCAC),
Ugnius Zilinskas scored a game-high 14 points and pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.
Carter Powell added 11 points and seven rebounds while freshman
Christian Watanabe tallied a season-high 12 points.
A little over four minutes into the game, Watanabe found Powell for a layup giving the Lords a slim, 9-6 advantage. A possession later, Watanabe drilled a three-ball from the top of the arc moving the home team's lead to 12-8.
After that though, the Yeomen got in gear. A 17-2 run that spanned over eight minutes saw Oberlin take a 25-14 lead. Tiedemann scored six of those points as the Lords went dry, hitting just one attempt on 14 shots. Oberlin maintained that double-digit lead the rest of the half and took a 36-24 margin into the locker room.
In the second half, the Lords pulled to within a possession. After a Silverman-Lloyd three-pointer at 14:40 brought the tally to 44-33, Kenyon went on an 8-0 stretch.
Senior
Ryan O'Neil drilled a long ball to start the run and it ended with a
Matt Shifrin free throw.
That quick spurt turned out to be Kenyon's last run, though. The visitors turned right around with an 8-0 run of its own and went back up eleven, 52-41. During the time, the Lords went five-straight possessions without a field goal.
The closest Kenyon got the rest of the way was six points twice, as Powell hit a free throw with 27 seconds left bringing the scoreboard to 61-55.
Next on the schedule for the Lords is a home date against Denison University on January 26 at 3 p.m. It will be "Senior Day" for Shifrin and
Tim Black.
