GAMBIER, Ohio – Denison University saw 13 of its players score during an 87-70 victory against Kenyon College on Saturday in a North Coast Athletic Conference men's hoops matchup.
At one point in the second half, the Big Red (6-12, 3-9 NCAC) were connecting on over 65 percent of their three-point and two-point attempts. Leading the way for the visitors was Jack Coulter who scored 17 points while hitting 5-of-7 from three-point range. By game's end, Denison hit 54.2 percent from downtown and 57.6 from the field, both season-bests.
Kenyon (1-18, 0-12 NCAC) had four players in double figures and was led by
Carter Powell's 16 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds.
Matt Shifrin added 13 points while
Elijah Davis contributed 12. Additionally, sophomore
Ugnius Zilinskas registered 11 points, a team-high four assists and seven boards.
Early on, a three-ball from Coulter broke a 5-5 tie and on the next possession, Gabe Bergeron sank a jumper to move the scoreboard to 10-5. Kenyon pulled to within two, 10-8, on its next trip after Powell fed Davis for a three-pointer at the 14-minute mark.
After that, Denison's offense put on a show. Over the final 14 minutes of the half, the visitors hit 14-of-17 which included five 3-pointers. In that span, Denison led by as many as 15 points (29-14) after a long ball from Claude Chandonnet. For the Lords during that stretch, they made just two of their 15 shots.
Despite the tough run, Kenyon battled to cut the deficit to seven, 31-24, following
Christian Watanabe's layup at 4:05. However, Denison reclaimed a double-digit advantage, 44-34, by halftime.
In the second half, the Lords never threatened the Big Red's advantage. Denison extended its lead to as many as 25 points after Conor Fenton scored in the paint at the 9:39 mark.
Prior to the game, the careers of Shifrin and
Tim Black were honored.
Next on the schedule for the Lords is a trip to The College of Wooster on January 30 at 8 p.m.
