DELAWARE, Ohio – Kenyon College freshman guard
Grace Connery came off the bench to sink five, first-half, three-point shots and ignite a Ladies basketball team that went on to chalk up a 69-59 North Coast Athletic Conference win Wednesday night at Ohio Wesleyan University.
With 5:28 showing on the first-quarter clock and Kenyon trailing 5-2, Connery went to work. She nailed her first three-pointer, tying the game at the 5:21 mark. A little more than a minute later, she sank another, giving the Ladies their first lead of the game at 8-6. Then, within a 42-second span, Connery drilled two more long balls, steering Kenyon to a 17-13 lead after one quarter of play.
Connery hit one more three-pointer in the second quarter to finish the game with a team-high 15 points. While she cooled off a bit, the Ladies did not. Junior
Paige Matijasich, who scored 14 points, poured in a couple of three-pointers of her own and senior
Jessica Gerber tacked on one more. As a team, the Ladies were 8-of-16 on three-point attempts in the first half. They outscored Ohio Wesleyan 20-8 in the second quarter and moved into halftime with a comfortable 37-21 advantage.
The host Battling Bishops (8-7, 3-3 NCAC) made some defensive changes in the second half and shut Connery down. The Ladies, however, countered with the play of Gerber and fellow senior
Lane Davis. Gerber tallied a couple more field goals and sank all six of her free throw attempts to finish the game with 13 points. She also fed Davis, who was 5-of-5 in the second half, 7-of-8 for the game and tied Connery's scoring output with 15 points. Davis also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, while Gerber rang up seven assists, giving her 21 over the Ladies' last three contests.
Kenyon (11-5, 5-3 NCAC) moved ahead by as many as 15 points three different times in the second half and the Battling Bishops never got closer than eight points.
While overall rebounding totals were even, the Ladies held the Battling Bishops to five offensive boards and just two second-chance points. At the other end of the floor, the Kenyon women had 10 offensive rebounds and 11 second-half points. Additionally, the Ladies turned 19 Ohio Wesleyan turnovers into 20 points.
The Ladies now face a full week away from competition. They will play again next Wednesday, when they host the Hiram College Terriers at 7: 30 p.m.
