GAMBIER, Ohio – For the eighth straight time, dating back to the 2013 season, the Kenyon College men's soccer team defeated its rival, Denison University. The latest Lords' win over the Big Red came Saturday at Mavec Field, where two second-half goals lifted the Purple and White to a 3-1 victory.
The Lords, ranked No. 9 in the current United Soccer Coaches national poll, also built upon another streak, extending their current winning run to 10 games. The Kenyon men are now 11-1-0 overall and sit atop the North Coast Athletic Conference standings with an unblemished 3-0-0 mark.
Within the game's first nine minutes, the Lords had generated some movement in the final third. A header from
Sebastian Gaese nearly found the net but Denison keeper Dylan Brown denied it with a leaping, one-handed save.
Kenyon had another opportunity in the ninth minute. Brown fouled
Scott Upton in the box resulting in a penalty kick. Brown, though, saved Upton's shot, on another diving attempt near the post.
The Lords then broke though in the 21st minute. A
Gunner Found corner kick was met left side by
Sam Hosmer-Quint who headed the ball into the right corner. That score remained until the 49th minute. After the halftime break, Denison's Leo Herard fired a near-perfect shot from the left wing and watched as it deflected off Kenyon goalie
Ian McInturf's right hand into the net.
Denison threatened just once more after that, paving the way for Kenyon to get back in front. That happened in the 78th minute.
Sophomore
Aidan Schoellkopf passed to Hosmer-Quint who headed a pass back to
Max Ohnesorge. The junior then fired past Brown for his first career goal. Kenyon then iced the match with less than four minutes left as a misplayed ball from Brown and a Denison defender came to Gaese who fired into an open net.
Kenyon will now prepare for its annual battle against No. 23 Ohio Wesleyan University. The Lords will travel to OWU on October 16 for a 7 p.m. conference match.
