No. 7 Lords, OWU play to 1-1 draw

DELAWARE, Ohio – Kenyon College (11-1-1, 3-0-1) and Ohio Wesleyan University battled it out for 110 minutes and ended up with a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Wednesday night in North Coast Athletic Conference action at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

Ohio Wesleyan (8-3-3, 3-0-1 NCAC) was credited with 27 shots, however, the Lords gave up few quality looks and watched as junior goalie Ian McInturf notched a half-dozen saves.

Going into the match, the Lords were looking to attack with long clearances. But tough field conditions did not exactly make that a reality and Ohio Wesleyan was able to score first. In the seventh minute, a free kick came to Brady Whittekind who shot near the middle of the box. McInturf saved that attempt but Charles Branche III cleaned up the rebound and pushed the home squad ahead, 1-0.

For the better part of the first half, the Lords were not able to get into the scoring range. That changed with less than six minutes before halftime. Newcomer Sebastian Brylka shot from the left side of the 18-yard goalie's box. His shot was deflected by an OWU defender and fellow newcomer Minka Soumah was there to drive the ball back in.

In the second half, there was not much offense to write about.  The best look came to OWU's Adam Yingling in the 70th minute but it hit off the post.

Heading into the first overtime, Brylka had a decent look from the right side but the freshman's shot went just in front of the left post. For OWU, its two attempts were stopped by McInturf.

There was one more chance for the hosts in the second overtime. A sequence of about six headers near the front of the net created a sticky situation for the Lords. Thankfully, the ball was cleared.

Kenyon will next play Wabash College on Saturday afternoon at Mavec Field at 3:30 p.m.
