Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Ladies shutout Tigers, run win streak to nine

GAMBIER, Ohio – Four different goal scorers put points on the board for the Kenyon College field hockey team as the Ladies rolled to a Sunday afternoon, 4-0, North Coast Athletic Conference victory at home against the Wittenberg University Tigers.

The win was Kenyon's ninth in a row, as well as its second consecutive shutout. The Ladies are now 10-2 overall and 3-0 in NCAC play. On the other side of the field, Wittenberg suffered its second straight loss and fell to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in conference competition.

The Ladies dominated possession throughout the game and outshot the Tigers, 14-3.

The Kenyon scoring started with two goals in the first quarter. The first, which occurred midway through the period, was fired in by junior Tara Shetty. She collected a rebound off an initial shot from sophomore Sarah Metzmaier and fired it past Wittenberg goalkeeper Emma Hurguy. The second, which was scored with just 22 seconds left in the period, was launched into the Wittenberg cage via a penalty stroke from sophomore Emma Hyer. The penalty stroke was awarded after an official called a Wittenberg defender for an intentional stick tackle from behind.

A little more than four minutes into the second quarter, junior Olivia O'Connell added to the Kenyon total. She whipped up a shot from just inside the circle. It traveled through a crowd, got past Hurguy and found the left side of the cage.

In the fourth, Kenyon tallied its first goal off of a penalty corner. Junior Paulina Mendez inserted the ball to Metzmaier. Metzmaier then wound up from the top of the circle and pelted the left corner of the Tigers' cage for her team-leading, and conference-leading, 13th goal of the season.

Freshman Payton Doan played the entire game in front of the Kenyon cage. She didn't have to touch the ball, but earned her fifth shutout of the season. She now has a 9-0 record to start her collegiate career.
