OWU deals Kenyon first NCAC loss

DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University (11-3, 5-1) edged Kenyon College (12-3, 5-1 NCAC) 1-0 on Wednesday night in North Coast Athletic Conference field hockey action at Selby Stadium.

The results puts the two teams  in a tie for first in the NCAC with two regular-season games remaining. The defeat also snapped Kenyon's 11-game winning streak.

In the first quarter, the Ladies controlled a majority of the possession. However, just one shot came the visitor's way and that was in the fourth minute. Junior Olivia O'Connell found a shot from near the right post but Ohio Wesleyan's Marie Overing was there.

That turned out to be Kenyon's lone shot of the first half.

On the other end, the Battling Bishops weren't able to muster much, either. In the 23rd minute, Madison Bruno lifted a shot to the upper-right corner; however, Ladies goalie Payton Doan raised her right hand and knocked it away.

By halftime, there were just four combined shots.

In the third, OWU found the match's lone goal in the 34th minute. Madison Bruno's penalty corner was inserted, and after a pass from Veronica Hardman, Astrid Koek fired from the left into the cage. It was the first time Kenyon had allowed a goal in over 325 minutes of action.

The Ladies did have some opportunities later in the third. Back-to-back penalty corners from Emma Hyer in the 40th minute resulted in a Sarah Metzmaier attempt. However, the lone shot was blocked.

A quarter later, with less than six minutes remaining, O'Connell fired from the top but the ball went wide. Senior Hannah Sklar added another quality look from the right side, but that attempt with less than three minutes left also went wide.

By game's end, each team had registered six shots while the Ladies held a slim 5-4 advantage in corners.

Next on the schedule for Kenyon is a road date at Oberlin College on October 29.
