WOOSTER, Ohio – Opening play Wednesday night with a 25-18 first-set win, it looked as if the Kenyon College volleyball team would handle with ease The College of Wooster. Instead, the host Fighting Scots stormed back to take the next three sets and claim a 18-25, 25-10, 25-23, 25-11 conference win.
The loss was the third straight for the Ladies, who fell to 5-17 overall and 2-4 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. On the other side of the net, the Fighting Scots, winners in three of their last four matches, improved to 10-13 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC.
In that first set, Kenyon led by as many as eight points. A kill from
Paige Milhon, followed by an ace from
Mackenzie Bruzzio gave the Ladies a 15-8 advantage. Three more aces, one by
Maya Sapsford and two by
Macy Reimbold, later extended the Ladies' lead to 21-13.
Wooster then made a run to pull within three points, but Kenyon finished off the set with a kill from
Elyse Davidson and a final ace from
Maleah Miller.
The Kenyon win served as a wake-up call for Wooster, which raced out to 12-2 start in the second set. The Ladies, who posted 11 kills and a .259 attack percentage in the first set, managed just three kills and a negative hitting percentage in the second set. They never drew closer than eight points the rest of the set.
Wooster's Haley Nash came to life in that second set, smashing five kills. She threw down two more in the third set and seven in the fourth to lead all players with 16 kills on the night. Anna Medema also picked up her play for Wooster as the match went on. She tallied eight of her 14 kills in the final two sets.
Kenyon tried to regain its lead in the third set, using four kills from Reimbold and three more from
Haley Witschey. Wooster, however, broke up a 19-19 tie by outscoring Kenyon 6-4 down the stretch. The Fighting Scots collected those final six points on kills from Medema, Katie Billetdeaux, Cami Miller and Emily Gail.
Miller recorded three kills for Kenyon in the fourth set, but the Ladies could not recover. Wooster looked to Nash and Medema to finish things off. The Fighting Scots took commanding leads of 6-0 and 15-5 before closing out the match.
Witschey, Miller and Davidson each had six kills for the match. Bruzzio and Reimbold logged five apiece. Sapsford had one of her better collegiate matches, posting 23 assists, six digs, three block assists, two service aces and a kill. Bruzzio also pitched in with eight digs, while Reimbold and
Katie Howard both chalked up seven.
