GAMBIER, Ohio – In two of three sets on Saturday, Wittenberg University held Kenyon College to a .000 attack percentage as the Tigers (14-7, 7-0 NCAC) won 3-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference volleyball action at Tomsich Arena.
Kenyon didn't help itself either, as its 23 errors tied for the second-most this season.
Senior
Mackenzie Bruzzio tallied a team-high seven kills and 17 digs while classmate
Haley Witschey registered a half-dozen kills and two block assists. Newcomers
Maya Sapsford and
Jac Cousineau each contributed double-digit assist totals and libero
Katie Howard notched 13 digs and match-high four service aces.
In the opening set, Kenyon trailed 4-0 before a quick 4-0 spurt of its own with kills from
Macy Reimbold,
Maleah Miller and an ace from Howard tied it.
The back and forth continued before a strong sequence from the Ladies gave them a three-point lead (15-12) midway through. Witschey and Reimbold started a 6-1 stretch with kills before Howard recorded three-straight aces to give the home squad that three-point lead. That momentum dwindled, though, as the Tigers hit a set-clinching 10-1 run to go up 22-16 following a Katie Hiestand kill.
Competition was tight again in the second. A block from
Elyse Davidson and Witschey had the Ladies down 10-9 before a kill by Davidson moved the deficit to 13-10. The Tigers held that lead, though, and later led 19-12 after a Kenyon error. The home squad kept fighting, and rallied to pull the score to 19-16 as
Lauren Limbach, Bruzzio and Miller all tallied points. After that, Kenyon was not able to keep the momentum and fell 25-17.
The Tigers closed the door with a fast start in the third. It was 7-0 as Hiestand tallied a pair of kills while Kenyon committed three errors. The Ladies did pull the score to 22-18 after a Cousineau ace, but could not pull any closer.
Kenyon will close its conference schedule with a road date against Ohio Wesleyan University on October 29 at 7 p.m.
