DELAWARE, Ohio – Kenyon College senior
Mackenzie Bruzzio recorded eight kills and 11 digs Tuesday night, but that wasn't enough to get the Ladies volleyball team past Ohio Wesleyan University, which walked out of Branch Rickey Arena with a 25-17, 25-22, 25-13 triumph.
The loss dropped the Ladies to 5-19 overall and finalized their North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) record at 2-6. That locks the team into the No. 7 seed for next week's conference tournament. Because the top two seeds get double-byes in the tournament, which will be held at Wittenberg University, Kenyon will open play against The College of Wooster, the tournament's No. 6 seed.
Ohio Wesleyan improved to 12-13 overall and 6-2 in the conference. The Battling Bishops earned the NCAC Tournament's No. 3 seed and a first-round bye. In the second round, they will await the winner of the Kenyon versus Wooster match.
The Ladies won the first point of the first set Tuesday, but never led again for the rest of the set. Ohio Wesleyan moved ahead 4-2 and 11-6. A little later, a 7-1 run by the Battling Bishops was the back-breaker for the Ladies. During that run, Jordan Brandt had a pair of kills and Molly Jewett served up three straight aces.
The second set was much closer, with neither team leading by more than three points. Kenyon quickly opened with a 4-1 lead, but Brandt notched two more kills to knot things at 4-4. From there, play was tight and featured eight more tied scores. Both
Elyse Davidson and
Lauren Limbach had three kills each for the Ladies, while Bruzzio and
Haley Witschey two apiece. With things tied for the final time at 22-22, Ohio Wesleyan closed out the set on two Kenyon errors and a kill from Paige Hale.
Kenyon again kept things close in the third set, using kills from Bruzzio, Davidson, Limbach and Witschey to knot things up at 8-8. After that, the wheels fell off for the Ladies. The Battling Bishops used five kills, two aces and four Kenyon errors to go on an 11-1 run that put things out of reach.
For the match, Limbach followed up Bruzzio's eight kills with seven of her own. Davidson and Witschey each contributed six kills.
Maya Sapsford led the team in assist with 15, while
Katie Howard racked up a team-high 12 digs.
Brandt finished with a match-high 15 kills for Ohio Wesleyan. Eliza Richardson added 10 and Jewett polished things off with 30 assists and five service aces.
