Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ladies rebound with strong effort versus Pioneers

YORK, Pa. – Kenyon College (2-1) earned a 63-47 win against William Paterson University (1-2) on Saturday in the consolation game of York College's Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

The Ladies got double-digit scoring efforts from Paige Matijasich (24), Ellie Schaub (19) and Grace Connery (14). Collectively, the team responded to a tough performance a day ago with a respectable 41 percent shooting mark and 76.5 percent clip from the free throw line.

First-quarter competition was close as neither team held a lead greater than five points. The Ladies got out to an 8-3 advantage when Matijasich scored off a Schaub pass at 6:27. Later, Connery converted a Madelyn Anderson pass from downtown pushing Kenyon up 11-9. That was the last lead in the period, though, as the Pioneers closed with a 5-2 run.

Down 14-13 heading to the second, Kenyon turned the game in its favor very quickly. A possession after Connery sank a jumper, Schaub converted the rare four-point play, by hitting a three-ball and free throw. That gave the Ladies a 19-16 lead and sparked a 15-0 run. By the 4:18 mark, the Ladies held a 28-16 advantage after Amanda Carroll's jumper.

Kenyon's defense in the second quarter was superb, too, holding William Paterson to a miserable 3-for-17 shooting clip. By halftime, the Ladies led 34-24.

In the third, Kenyon maintained its double-digit advantage and after the period, had a 50-31 lead following two Matijasich free throws. The Pioneers scored just six points in the quarter.

The final quarter saw Kenyon go up as many as 23 points (58-35) after a layup from Matijasich at 5:42.

Next on the schedule is a road date against Muskingum University on November 20 at 6 p.m.
