NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- Kenyon College Ladies' guard
Paige Matijasich surpassed 1,000 career points and had the game-winning layup with 7.6 seconds remaining to give Kenyon a 64-63 victory against the Muskingum University Fighting Muskies (2-1) on Wednesday night. The non-conference matchup was held at the Anne C. Steele Center.
Matijasich led all scorers with 25 points alongside 10 rebounds, three assists and a steal. Junior
Ellie Schaub was the only other Kenyon (3-1) player scoring in double digits, collecting 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting and a team-high three steals. As a team, Kenyon was fabulous at the free throw line, hitting 18-of-21 (85.7%).
The Ladies jumped out to an early 12-4 advantage in the first quarter before the Fighting Muskies went on an 11-0 run that extended into the opening moments of the second. Both teams exchanged baskets in the second before a Schaub jumper propelled the Ladies on a 12-1 stretch to end the opening half with Kenyon leading 33-23.
The second half was dominated early by the Fighting Muskies, as they outscored the Ladies by four (17-13) in the third quarter. Muskingum began the fourth quarter on an 11-0 run before a
Grace Connery jumper made it a three-point game (51-48) with just over five minutes remaining.
A couple possessions after Connery's shot, Sam Filiaggi converted an and-one to push the home squad up five, 54-49 with 3:31 left. Kenyon was able to claw back and tie the game as
Greta Propp tied the contest at 56 less than a minute later. The score stayed within two points after that and after
Amanda Carroll's two free throws with 37 seconds remaining, the Ladies led 62-60.
The final 37 seconds were chaotic. Muskingum's Camay Baylock made a three pointer from straight away with 27 seconds left to give the home squad a 63-62 lead. Following a missed jump shot from Connery, Devyn Bonner collected the Muskingum rebound and was sent to the line and promptly missed two free throws. Matijasich collected the rebound and took it all the way and scored from the right side to give the Ladies the lead for good. Baylock added the final shot of the game, but her layup rimmed out as time expired.
The victory gives Kenyon a record of 3-1. They will head to Chicago on Saturday to take part in the UChicago Midway Classic. Competition opens up with Trine College on the 23rd at 3 p.m. and the host Maroons on Sunday the 24th, also at 3 p.m.
