GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College (15-1-2, 7-0-2 NCAC) won its fifth straight North Coast Athletic Conference regular-season title on Saturday as they controlled the DePauw University Tigers during a 4-0 win at Mavec Field.
The victory helped secure the No. 1 seed in next week's four-team NCAC Tournament for Kenyon who will face Oberlin College on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Additionally, Kenyon moved its unbeaten streak in league play to 34 games. Their last NCAC regular season-loss came October 1, 2016 to DePauw.
Like their last game versus Oberlin, the Lords struck early. About 4:30 minutes in,
Sam Carson shot from the left side but his attempt was saved by Tigers' keeper Dylan Ruzbasan. The rebound, though, came to
Luke Muther who fired back in.
That score held for the remainder of the first as each team attempted just two shots each.
In the second half, the No. 12 Lords blew the match wide open. At 51:24, Carson blazed by the DePauw defense and crossed a pass to
Sam Hosmer-Quint who shot near the middle for his third goal of the season.
Kenyon scored twice more in the 67th and 69th minutes from the foot of
Tomas Munoz Reyes. The first came as Munoz Reyes finished off a
Jack Cohen cross near the left post. The other, started by a counter attack from senior
Philippe Stengel, saw freshman
Atli Hrafnkelsson pass to an open Munoz Reyes who again scored from the left side.
The Lords out-shot DePauw 12-5 while goalie
Ian McInturf recorded two saves in goal.
Wednesday's match versus Oberlin will be the second in a week. Kenyon defeated the Yeomen 5-1 on October 30.
