GAMBIER, Ohio – A potent offensive attack helped Westminster College earn an 82-72 victory over Kenyon College on Friday night in a non-conference basketball game at Tomsich Arena.
The Titans shot 53 percent from the field, 47 percent from downtown and added a 20-of-23 (87%) performance from the free throw line in the win. For Kenyon (4-4), it was the second-most points it allowed all season.
Within the first seven minutes of the first half, competition was very close. The Lords hit three-straight three-pointers and at the 16:07 mark, led 9-7 after
Ryan O'Neil's long ball. A few sequences later, Westminster's Isaac Stamatiades hit a pair of free throws giving the Titans a slim 12-9 advantage.
Those free throws sparked Westminster over the next five minutes as the visitors went up 11 points twice. The last of those leads came as the game's leading scorer, Dylan O'Hara, hit two free throws bringing the tally to 26-15. Kenyon fought back to bring the deficit to six, 33-27, after a fast-break three-pointer from
Kamal Aubakirov at 4:37. However, that was the closest the Lords got as the Titans went back up eleven, 43-32, at halftime.
O'Hara and Stamatiades each tallied 12 points in the first 20 minutes.
After the break, the Lords rallied over the first 10 minutes of the second stanza.
About 90 seconds into the half, an
Ugnius Zilinskas jumper in the paint brought the tally to 45-39. The score remained in the single digits until a mini-spurt from Kenyon at the 11:56 mark. Down 56-49,
Kase Cronin scored in the paint and three possessions later, O'Neil's breakaway layup gave the Lords a 61-60 lead.
For the Lords, though, they were not able to keep that momentum. A 12-0 Titans run ended at the 5:45 mark as Lloyd Chatman hit two free throws to push the visitors back up 72-61. After that, the Lords could not find another stretch.
Chatman ended with 16 points off the bench while O'Hara and Stamatiades combined for 44. As for the Lords, Zilinskas finished with 19 while O'Neil tallied a season-high 18 points to go along with a game-high five assists. Additionally, Aubakirov registered a season-high 12 points while
Elijah Davis contributed 12.
After finals, the Lords will venture to Daytona Beach, Florida on December 29 to face Lycoming College.
