Final run lifts Lords over Lycoming

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Down double digits with less than nine minutes left, the Kenyon College Lords basketball team rallied to defeat Lycoming College 69-67 on Sunday during the Land of Magic Classic hosted by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Ugnius Zilinskas led all scorers with 24 points while pulling down 10 rebounds. Sam Walch added 12 points while senior Carter Powell chipped in with 10. Despite committing 19 turnovers, the Lords' offense was very efficient, hitting 50 percent from the field and nearly 44 percent from three-point range.

On Kenyon's opening possession, Walch drained a three-ball before Zilinskas scored the next eight for the Lords. At the 15:07 mark of half, the Lords had attained an 11-4 advantage.

Kenyon (5-4) wasn't able to keep that pace, though, as it turned the ball over four times in the next five-minute sequence. In that span, Lycoming (8-4) saw five of its players score, and it took a 16-15 lead after Deandre Manuel's layup at 10:32.

Despite relinquishing the lead, the Lords got back in front on a Powell three-pointer and held their advantage until the final 3:49. In those late-half moments, the Warriors hit a 9-3 spurt as Tobias Walden Jr. scored four and gave Lycoming a 36-35 halftime lead.

After the break, the Warriors extended their lead to double digits. A little over five minutes into the half, a long ball from Dyson Harward pushed the score to 50-39. During that early second-half run, Kenyon hit two of eight shots and committed a trio of turnovers.

Lycoming would stay in front until Kenyon's final push in the last 5:07. Trailing 62-56, Zilinskas converted an and-one to pull the Lords within three. A couple minutes later, Ryan O'Neil dished to Kamal Aubakirov in the left corner and the sophomore drilled a three-pointer to bring the tally to 66-65 with 1:08 remaining. That was one of O'Neil's game-high five assists.

Kenyon came up with a stop on Lycoming's next possession, paving the way for the Lords to retake the lead. O'Neil picked up a missed shot and drove coast to coast and scored the fast-break layup. It was Kenyon's first lead in more than 20 minutes.

The Warriors tied the game at 67 with a free throw from Harward before the final shot came to Zilinskas. With the clock ticking down, the standout junior drove to the right block and scored over two defenders to give the Lords a 69-67 lead. Lycoming got another possession with one second left, however, they weren't able to get a shot off.

Tomorrow, the Lords will face off against Alfred University (4-4) at noon at the ICI Center.
