GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Kenyon College women's basketball team ran alongside the No. 6-ranked DePauw University Tigers for the first quarter of Tuesday's North Coast Athletic Conference game. The host Tigers, however, pulled away in the second quarter and chalked up a 56-42 win to close out the calendar year.
Senior
Paige Matijasich scored nine first-quarter points and steered the Ladies to a 16-16 tie after first-quarter action. The Tigers, who shot 54.5 percent (6-of-11) in those first ten minutes, kept pouring it on the second quarter by shooting 76.9 percent (10-of-13), outscoring the Ladies 28-6 and building a 44-22 halftime lead.
After Kenyon sophomore
Amanda Carroll made a couple of free throws at the 8:09 mark of the second quarter, the Ladies hit a drought as the Tigers took off, scoring eight straight to spark a 16-2 run. During that game-changing run, the Tigers attacked the paint, converting five layups, drawing five fouls and going 6-for-7 at the free throw line.
Despite their deficit, the Ladies forged ahead, played solid defense in the second half and drew as close as 11 points late in the game. The Ladies held the Tigers to just 12 second-half points on 12.5 percent (4-of-32) shooting.
Matijasich finished with a game-high 19 points. She also grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
Ellie Schaub, a junior, added 10 points for Kenyon, while both Carroll and
Katie Orefice finished with four.
On the other side of the floor, Sydney Kopp led the Tigers with 15 points. Hayley Cange chipped in with 10 points and racked up a game-high 16 rebounds, helping DePauw build a significant 47-26 margin on the boards.
The loss dropped Kenyon to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in the NCAC, while the win bumped DePauw to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
