WOOSTER, Ohio – Trailing by 13 at halftime and by 17 midway through the third quarter, the Kenyon College women's basketball team looked to senior
Paige Matijasich, who delivered a career-high 32 points and helped orchestrate a rally that resulted in a 74-68 Ladies' victory at The College of Wooster.
Matijasich's 32 points topped her previous season best of 25 points (at Muskingum University on November 20) and her previous career best of 27 points (against Bethany College on November 27, 2017). Facing the Fighting Scots on Saturday, Matijasich went 11-of-19 overall, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, and 7-of-8 at the free throw line. She also piled up a season best 14 rebounds and handed out six assists.
Additionally, Matijasich's scoring output bumped her season total to 235 points and her Kenyon career total to 1,171 points, a tally that ranks ninth best in program history and puts her just nine points away from moving up two more spots on the Ladies' list of all-time leading scorers.
The Ladies began to turn things around against Wooster with two free throws from
Greta Propp.
Madelyn Anderson and Matijasich followed with buckets that cut the Kenyon deficit to 11 points with about five minutes left in the third quarter.
Before the quarter ended, the Ladies rang up 16 points in the final 3:21. Matijasich scored seven of those points, including a three-pointer that pulled the Ladies within two points, 50-48, prior to the horn sounding.
Amanda Carroll chalked up six points during the run and
Grace Connery tacked on a three-pointer a little more than two minutes ahead of Matijasich's.
Kenyon carried the momentum into the fourth quarter and whipped up a 10-0 run to take a 58-50 lead. Matijasich scored the first five of those ten points for Kenyon, while
Bridget Molnar knocked down a field goal and
Ellie Schaub added another three-pointer.
Wooster came back to narrow Kenyon's lead to one, but Connery and
Kiele Anderson responded with back-to-back three-balls. Down the stretch, Wooster would get no closer than three points. A layup from Connery and a trio of free throws from Matijasich sealed the Ladies' six-point win.
The Ladies shot 69.2 percent (9-of-13) in the fourth quarter, while shooting 41.5 percent (27-of-65) for the duration. From beyond the arc, they connected on a season best 10 three-pointers, while shooting 38.5 percent (10-of-26).
Connery had four of those three-pointers and finished with 14 points. Carroll finished with eight points and no other Kenyon player scored more than four.
Wooster shot 45.5 percent (15-of-33) in the first half to take a 39-26 halftime lead. In the second half, however, the Fighting Scots managed just 25.0 percent shooting (9-of-36). Maria Janasko, who poured in 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds, led the Wooster effort. Kylie Orr finished with 14, Akwia Tilton scored 11 and A'Janay Nicholson added 10.
