HIRAM, Ohio – For the second time this season, senior
Lane Davis and junior
Paige Matijasich dialed up double-doubles and boosted the Kenyon College women's basketball team to victory. Wednesday night at Hiram College, the two combined for 33 points and 25 rebounds during the Ladies' 65-55 win over the host Terriers.
Trailing 34-30 at halftime, the Ladies turned to Davis and Matijasich to lead the way. Davis responded with six points and seven rebounds during the second half, while Matijasich tallied nine points and ten rebounds. Those numbers led to Davis finishing the contest with 12 points, 10 boards, three assists and three blocked shots. Matijasich ended up with 21 points, 15 rebounds and five assists. Her 15 rebounds were a career-high.
The Kenyon duo pulled off the same feat three weeks ago, against the same Hiram team. During a 56-52 home win over the Terriers on January 16, Davis chalked up 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Matijasich had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The turning point in Wednesday's game occurred about midway through the third quarter. With Hiram holding a 38-34 advantage, Kenyon reeled off ten straight points to move ahead by six. That burst included layups from Davis and Matijasich and three-pointers from
Grace Connery and
Ellie Schaub. Matijasich then scored five more points and pushed the Ladies into the final quarter of play with 49-44 lead.
Hiram got as close as three points in the fourth, but Kenyon bounced back to build eight-point advantages on three different occasions.
Jessica Gerber's two free throws at the end of the game gave the Ladies their largest lead.
Connery sank four more three-pointers, giving her 58 on the season and 12 points on the night. Meanwhile, Schaub nearly joined the double-double party with nine points and seven rebounds for the Ladies, who shot 40.7 percent (24-of-59).
At the other end of the floor, the Terriers shot just 28.6 percent (18-of-63). They were able to keep the game close by scoring 15 points off of 16 Kenyon turnovers.
Tashauna Wright netted a game-high 20 points for Hiram, which fell to 9-14 overall and 3-11 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Alainna Conroy added 10 points and Erica Johnson grabbed a team-best 11 rebounds.
Kenyon, which improved to 15-7 overall and 9-5 in the NCAC, will now look to extend its current win streak to four with a non-conference road game at Washington and Jefferson College on Saturday afternoon.
