Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Second-quarter skid sinks Kenyon

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Kenyon College women's basketball team struggled through a second quarter in which it scored four points Saturday. The Ladies' skid left the door wide open for the Presidents of Washington and Jefferson College to claim a 75-51 non-conference home win.

Both offenses had a productive first quarter. Washington and Jefferson got a dozen points from Danielle Parker and raced out to a 22-17 lead. At the other end, Paige Matijasich got things going for Kenyon with seven points in those first 10 minutes.

The Ladies shot 46.2 percent, including making 3-of-6 three-pointers, in the opening frame. The wheels, however, fell off in the second quarter. Kenyon was just 2-of-16 (12.5 percent) and misfired on all six of its three-point attempts. Lane Davis and Bridget Molnar accounted for the team's two field goals.

Washington and Jefferson (16-7) scored 13 in the second quarter and took a 35-21 halftime lead.

Kenyon (15-8) trimmed the deficit to 11 in the third quarter, but the Presidents never relinquished their double-digit lead.

Parker ended up with a game-high 16 points for Washington and Jefferson, which shot at a rate of 49.1 percent (26-of-53) for the game. Fellow starters Aleena McDaniel and Alie Seto tacked on 14 and 11 points, respectively. Both Parker and Seto grabbed eight rebounds, contributing to the Presidents' 41-32 edge on the glass.

Matijasich finished with 14 points, her 27th consecutive game, dating back to last season, with a double-digit scoring mark. Molnar, who went 6-of-7, added a season-high 13 points, while Grace Connery sank a trio of three-pointers for nine points.

Throughout the game, the Presidents capitalized on Kenyon turnovers and play in the paint. The Ladies' 18 turnovers resulted in 23 Washington and Jefferson points. Many of those points were tallied in the paint, where the Presidents posted a 36-20 advantage.

Kenyon will revert to conference play Wednesday, when it hosts its final regular-season home game. That contest will be against Ohio Wesleyan University and will tip off at 6 p.m.
