Maroons pull away from Lords in fourth

SALEM, Va. – Roanoke College scored five of the seven goals in the fourth quarter en route to a 17-10 win against the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team on Tuesday. Both the Maroons and Lords moved their records to 3-3 in the process.

Matt Pollack, for the fourth time this season, led the Kenyon attack with a team-high four goals. Additionally, Sam Humphrey, Emilio Sosa and Nick Vitale each tallied two points. Defensively, goalie David Metzger was outstanding as he notched a season-best 19 saves. Furthermore, Joe Bolea contributed a goal and game-high six ground balls.

After falling behind 3-0 almost four minutes into action, Sosa and Vitale teamed up for Kenyon's first goal at 6:14.  Less than a minute later, Vitale registered his lone goal of the game to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Kenyon had another possession right after that, however, Humphrey's shot was blocked and the ensuing Roanoke possession saw Jason Sarro score. By the end of the period, the home squad led 5-2.

A quarter later, Roanoke had opened with a 4-1 stretch and attained a 9-3 lead after Sarro fed Brendan Devane with 4:32 remaining. Kenyon responded to cut the deficit to three (9-6) as Pollack scored twice with Joe Woody tallying the other with about two minutes left. The Maroons stopped that run, though, as Sarro scored on a man-up opportunity.

Following halftime, Roanoke's offense had a few more shots than Kenyon (11-9) but Metzger kept things close for the visitors. He came up with six saves and by the end of the quarter, each team had scored twice and the scoreboard read 12-8.

In the final period, the Lords were not able to get the deficit inside of three as the Maroons scored three times to open the quarter.

By game's end, Roanoke had out-shot Kenyon 53-37 and held a plus-12 advantage in on-goal attempts (36-24).

The Lords will remain on the road for their next game which comes March 16 at Albion College.
