ALBION, Mich. – Locked in a 4-4 tie at halftime with the Albion College Britons, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team broke free in second-half play and claimed an 11-5 non-conference win Saturday at Alumni Field.
After the host Britons jumped out to leads of 2-1 and 4-2, the Lords registered second-quarter goals from
Joe Woody and
Matt Pollack to square things up.
Woody then opened the third quarter with another goal, his seventh of the season, to put the Lords ahead for the first time in the game. That lead lasted about five minutes. At the 7:55 mark of the third quarter, Albion scored again, knotting the game up at 5-5.
Following that goal, Kenyon junior
Sam Humphrey and senior
Nick Vitale took over the game, sparking a Lords offense that scored six unanswered to close out the contest.
Vitale, who had six assists throughout the game, set up four of Kenyon's last six scores. Humphrey scored three times over the final 20 minutes with two of those three occurring in man-up situations. Humphrey's first score came at 5:06 of the third and gave Kenyon a 6-5 lead. His last came at 10:59 of the fourth and pushed the Lords ahead 9-5.
Along with one from Humphrey, the Lords got other fourth-quarter goals from
Will Harrigan,
Emilio Sosa and Pollack, who finished with three goals and an assist.
Back in first-half action, Albion outshot Kenyon 17-15, while winning just three of seven face-offs. In the second half, Kenyon outshot Albion 31-11 and won four of ten face-offs. Kenyon was 3-for-7 in extra-man opportunities, while Albion was just 1-for-4.
With this game in the books, the Kenyon defense, backed by sophomore goalkeeper
David Metzger, has yielded an average of just 10 goals per game. Against Albion, Metzger made 14 saves, bringing his season total to an even 80.
The victory halted a brief three-game skid for the Lords, who improved to 4-3. Albion fell to 1-5 with the loss.
