COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University (7-13) rallied for a 3-2 game-one win before claiming a 5-2 victory in the second against Kenyon College on Wednesday in a non-conference softball doubleheader at Clowson Field. The Ladies lost their fourth-straight doubleheader and moved their record to 13-11 in the process.
GAME ONE
Emily Pater was controlling the Crusaders bats through the first five frames during the opener.
The first-year surrendered just two hits, never allowed a Capital player to reach scoring position and had induced 10 combined groundouts and fly balls.
With Pater dealing, the Ladies broke through with two runs in the third.
Grace Finn and
Bella Albrecht were occupying the base paths and senior
Britny Patterson went first pitch swinging and drilled a three-bagger to right field.
The 2-0 score remained until the bottom of the sixth.
Capital was down to its final out in that frame and Kristen Mellott and Chevonne Hayslett delivered. Mellott's two-run double down the right-field line tied the game before Hayslett's two-bagger on the left-field side plated the go-ahead run.
Kenyon did get a runner on base in the seventh, however, Brianna Reardon was able to retire the next two batters and preserve the 3-2 win.
GAME TWO
There was not much going on through the first two frames until Capital added all of its runs in the third and fourth innings.
The Crusaders attained a 1-0 lead in the third after back-to-back doubles from Alyx Slusher and Morgan Fadel.
An inning later, the home squad really opened things up. With two out, a one-out single to left field from Mycala Duhart plated teammate Hannah Martin. A couple batters later, Fadel's fielder's choice with the bases loaded added Capital's third run. The scoring was capped off by a two-run single from Erica Ogden.
In the sixth, Kenyon got ahold of Hayslett just a little to break the 5-0 deficit. A two-out walk was issued to
Olivia Hurley and in the next at-bat, first-year
Nicole Bishay cranked a single up the middle and scored
Lauren Graf. The Ladies did get another hit in their next plate appearance from
Clare McMahon; however, a 9-1-2 throw-out of Hurley at home ended the frame.
Offensive play was similar for Kenyon in the seventh. A two-out hit from Patterson scored
Grace Finn to cut the deficit to 5-2. After a single from
Grace Pilz brought the tying run to the plate, Graf sent a shot to right field. Unfortunately, for Kenyon, a throw from Capital's outfielder came to its shortstop who tagged Pilz out.
Kenyon will return home on March 30 when it hosts DePauw University for a conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
