Game Recap: Softball |

First NCAC games don’t go Kenyon’s way

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Kenyon College softball team looked to snap a losing streak and start fresh Saturday with its first two games in North Coast Athletic Conference action, but the host Fighting Scots of The College of Wooster had other ideas and swept the Ladies by scores of 7-5 and 7-2.

At the start of the day, it looked as if things would go Kenyon's way. A leadoff double from Grace Finn was followed by run-scoring hits from Britny Patterson and Emily Pater. That gave Kenyon a 3-0 lead in the opening inning.

Wooster then tagged Pater, Kenyon's starting pitcher, for five hits and five runs in the bottom of the first. When the inning flipped, the Ladies kept the pressure on Wooster starter Olivia Johnson. A Patterson double, combined with a Wooster throwing error, knotted the game at 5-5.

Both starting pitchers settled down the rest of the way. Johnson finished off the game to get the win for Wooster. In her seven innings, she allowed 10 hits and two earned runs. She struck out nine and walked one. Meanwhile, Pater worked six innings and struck out two. She gave up seven earned runs on 13 hits and one walk.

Wooster was able to break the tie and win the game by getting to Pater for two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Fighting Scots rang up three singles and a double in the inning.

In game two, Kenyon again scored in the top of the first inning. Sara Campagna tripled and later tapped the plate after Patterson singled.

The Wooster bats didn't slow down. They scored two in the second, one in the third and three more in the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead. The Fighting Scots had nine hits against Austen Whibley, Kenyon's game-two pitcher who threw all but the last out of the game. Whibley didn't walk a batter and she struck out two. Five of the seven runs scored against her were earned.

The Ladies final run of the day came on an RBI single from Grace Pilz in the top of the sixth inning. Wooster answered with one more run in the bottom of the inning to finalize the scoring at 7-2.

At the plate, Campagna finished the doubleheader 4-for-6 with three runs scored. That pumped up her team-best batting average to .390 on the season. Finn was 3-for-6 with three runs scored, while Pater, Pilz and Patterson each had two hits on the day. Pater notched two RBI, while Patterson led the team with three.

Kenyon (13-13, 0-2 NCAC) now returns home and faces DePauw University for a Sunday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
