FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Backed by a big day at the plate from senior
Matt Contreras and yet another solid pitching performance, the Kenyon College baseball team rolled to an 11-3 victory against SUNY Maritime on Wednesday at the Gladwin Baseball Complex.
At the plate, the Lords amassed 15 hits with four of them coming off the bat of Contreras, who was 4-for-5 with two home runs, four runs scored and three RBI. That brought his early-season batting average to a team-best .625 (10-for-16).
On the mound for the Lords, it was sophomore
Alex Gow's turn to baffle batters. He went six innings and earned the win after allowing just one earned run on three hits and four walks. He struck out seven and did not yield an extra-base hit.
Now four games into the season, the Lords are 3-1 and the pitching staff owns a 3.38 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 32 innings of work. Additionally, opponents are batting just .188 against the Kenyon arms.
The Lords didn't waste any time in jumping out to an early lead against the Privateers. In the top of the first,
Will Sturgeon reached on an error and Contreras followed with a single. Two batters later, they both scored on a single from
Paul Siciliano.
Alexander Hoskins walked and then both
Trenton DiFilippo and
Joaquin Murrieta ripped RBI singles to put Kenyon in front, 4-0.
The Privateers got one run back in the bottom of the first, but Contreras neutralized that with a solo home run to left field in the top of the fifth inning.
In the sixth, a Maritime error opened the door for the Lords to score five more. Singles from DiFilippo, Sturgeon and Contreras got two runs home. The other three runs scored on Gow's homer down the left field line.
Kenyon's final run came on Contreras' second long ball of the game, another solo shot to left field.
The Lords continue spring break action Thursday with a doubleheader against Lebanon Valley College. Game one is slated for a 10:30 a.m. start.
