HAVERFORD, Pa. – For the second straight contest, the Kenyon College Lords lacrosse team absorbed a heart-breaking, one-goal loss. Saturday, the Lords allowed a double-overtime goal to the Haverford College Fords, who slipped away from Swan Field with a 10-9 win.
Kenyon dominated possession, posting a 53-36 advantage in shots and a huge 18-6 margin in faceoffs won. Yet, that didn't translate into a win for the Lords, who dropped to 3-2 with the loss.
The first overtime was indicative of just how the game went for the Lords. They won the opening faceoff and fired off three shots. One hit the post, one went wide and one was blocked. When Haverford finally did gain possession, Kenyon defender
Patrick Coughlin forced a turnover, giving the Lords another run, which resulted in three more shots. This time, two went wide and one was saved with just five seconds left on the clock.
The second overtime opened with a rare Haverford faceoff win. About a minute into the period, the Fords took two shots. One sailed high and the other drifted wide. Upon the restart, Haverford's Sean Mowatt-Larssen delivered a pass to Brian Geffroy, who scored the game-winner with 2:31 on the clock.
Despite some of the lopsided statistical advantages posted by the Kenyon team, it never led by more than one goal. In the first quarter, the Lords tripled-up Haverford in shots, 18-6, but trailed on the scoreboard, 3-2.
Matt Pollack registered both of those Kenyon goals.
The Lords were much more efficient in the second quarter, scoring three times on eight shots. Goals by
Sam Humphrey,
Joe Woody and
Will Harrigan got Kenyon to the half with a 5-4 advantage.
From that point on, the teams went back-and-forth the rest of the game. Haverford scored the first two goals of the third quarter, but Kenyon sandwiched another Fords' score with goals from Harrigan and
Will Robbins. That sent the teams into the fourth frame knotted at 7-7.
The Fords then moved ahead 8-7 with a goal from Geffroy and Kenyon tied it back up with another score from Pollack. A little more than three minutes later, the Lords tallied the go-ahead goal on a low shot from Harrigan, who was assisted by Woody.
That Kenyon 9-8 lead did not hold. Haverford held possession late in the game and called a timeout with 23 seconds remaining. When play resumed, Ben Frost collected a pass from Rob McLallen and scored with just 12 seconds left, forcing overtime.
Pollack ended up with three goals for the Lords. Harrigan also had three goals, as well as one assist. Woody finished with one goal and three assists.
Reed Russell was 14-of-19 in faceoffs and
Ian Gobron was 4-of-5.
McLallen, Frost and Geffroy each had two goals to lead the Fords.
