MEADVILLE, Pa. – Twice topping the Allegheny College Gators on Tuesday, the Kenyon College softball team registered its third North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of the season. The Ladies won the first game 4-0 and then took the second game 4-2.
The two wins moved the Ladies' records to 19-15 overall and 6-4 in NCAC play. The losses dropped Allegheny to 8-20 overall and 3-9 in conference competition.
The Ladies' game-one victory featured a great pitching performance from freshman
Emily Pater. She tossed all seven innings, struck out five and gave up just one infield hit. She didn't walk or hit any batters. She got 10 Gators to ground out and six more to fly out, while improving her pitching record to 10-6.
At the plate, the Ladies logged all the scoring they needed in the second inning. That's when freshman designated player
Clare McMahon launched her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to right field.
The Ladies doubled that lead in the third inning.
Sara Campagna led off with a single and
Britny Patterson was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch.
Lauren Graf then singled to left center, scoring both runners.
In game two, Pater returned to the pitching circle for the Ladies and, again, threw all seven innings. This time she gave up two runs on six hits and one walk. She struck out a pair, while improving her pitching record to 11-6 and lowering her season ERA to 4.30.
Allegheny went ahead 1-0 in game two, but Kenyon tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. That Ladies' run scored when Pater singled home Graf, who reached base earlier on a fielder's choice.
The Gators answered with one more run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Ladies scored three times in the top of the seventh to put the game away.
Olivia Hurley and McMahon both singled.
Grace Finn walked to load the bases and Campagna was hit by a pitch, forcing a run home. Later, both Patterson and Pater stroked RBI singles to finalize the scoring.
In both games combined, Patterson ended up 3-for-7 at the plate. Graf was 3-for-8 with a run scored and two RBI. McMahon, Campagna, Pater and
Nicole Bishay all had two-hit days.
Kenyon gets right back to work tomorrow, traveling to Oberlin College for another NCAC doubleheader.
